Tuning in Mexico is prohibitive due to prices and availability. Imagine paying double or triple than our American counterparts. The likelihood of seeing a full TechArt (most readily available Porsche tuner in Mexico) Porsche is slim to none. Gemballa or Ruf cars are only dreams we see on magazines or the internet. But affordable Porsche engine tuning is now available thanks to a company called Autodynamica. Founded by Luis Galan in Mexico City, Autodynamica recently opened a hub in Houston, Texas. This network permits Autodynamica to bring their engine tuning parts at prices close to those in the States. Of course the Evoms cars started to roll out of Autodynamica's facilities like F-150's with a $3,500.00 dollar rebate out of a Texas Ford Dealer in a usual Summer Sale. Well not quite, but the very first examples are now on Mexican roads and we took 'em out for some testing.
Lets check out the action on our test day...
Evoms 550 shiny and ready...
Looking at the Evoms 550 "tid bits" we found interesting Ruf mirrors. These were supplied by Ruf Autocentre in Dallas and an specific trip was made to bring the mirrors. Sorry FedEx won't ship to Mexico... crap!!!
Evom's own airbox includes exposed high flow filter... power and sound is added...
Evom's "shorty" headers... turned blue after a few hot runs... beautiful!!!
The other two toys arrived... in silver the incospicuous Evoms 700... in blue the Piasini Engineering 500...
Gasing 'em up... the only choice of gas in Mexico is Pemex... of course being a state running monopoly gas is expensive and bad... stations are crooks that don't serve complete amounts sold and sell "diluted" gas... its a miracle our cars run at all...
... and they go at it... we follow closely in the Evoms 550...
Evoms 700 well out in front, Piasini 500 just past our photo "chase car" a 996 C4S owned by Miguel Lorenzo and we continue to follow...
Evoms 700 arrives "shot gun" at the toll booth...
Evoms 700 got the upper hand at high revs...
... once those K24s start blowing there is nothing stopping the Evoms 700...
Now riding in the Evoms 700 chasing the Evoms 550... acceleration on both Evoms is brutal...
Open road... whooo hooo... on our way to 300kph... I soon found out 200kph (125mph) is nothing for these turbos, 270kph (170mph) is cruise speed and 300kph (187mph) is easily attainable...
Of course the money shot... should I add? "All photos by Porsche Specialist, Frissen Gutierrez"
Open road and fast turbos...
... and back to do it all over again...
Lunch time...
Lunch was served at Las Calandrias www.lascalandrias.com.mx a beautiful place just a few miles down the road in Atlixco, Puebla. For our Autodynamica's friends coming from Houston, Tx. the most typical plate from Puebla was served, "Chile en Nogada". All paid by Marcos Mastretta owner of the Piasini 500, thanks Marcos.
Lunch time served to discuss each others opinion on the turbos and take a closer look to the cars. Gerardo Tejeda's Evoms 550 sporting GT3 seats, thicker steering wheel and what is the best value Porsche 986/996 shift knob out there, coming from none other than Ruf. Ruf pedals were also added and suppied by Ruf Autocentre Dallas www.rufautocentre.com
Leaving "Las Calandrias" the Piasini 500 delivered factory like power with a huge increase of mid range torque... fast... www.piasiniengineering.it
Back on the road again...
Here they come...
Bye for now, I'm switching to video...
End of the test... we sure had fun... these turbos are very fast...
For those who enjoy reading...
The Evoms www.evoms.com 996TT's displayed tremendous performance and driveability. I have always been inclined on replacing key components on turbocharged cars such as: wastegates, diverter valves and headers. In the 996TT these are essential as factory parts are crap. Also recommended, intake and exhaust. Evoms own intake does a great job at bringing power and sound at a moderate price. It is built with great quality and looks great with the exposed cone filter. I was amazed at the Milltek www.milltek.co.uk exhaust, it does come at a price over the Fabspeed www.fabspeed.com but certainly worth it. The Milltek exhaust showed minimum inside cabin resonance, tremendous sound and great power. Silicon hoses are my number one recommendation on any turbo car, the 996TT is no exception. Evoms offers a hose kit in color of choice red or black, simply get them. Once everything is in place, it gets orchestrated by the EVOMS/GIAC www.giacusa.com software that is beyond fantastic. Choice of tubos comes essential at this very point, keeping the K16's on modified form or jumping to larger K24's is the question. The K16's bring more driveability and great power, yet the K24's bring most power. Going for the 700hp gets more complicated, engine internal parts such as pistons, rods and cranckshaft get in place of the factory units, intercoolers and radiators are exchanged, modified K24's are a must and intake with "y" hose, metal plumbing, ultra free flow exhaust and HD clutch are imperative to keep things in working order. Once finished, the result is an ultrafast 996TT that reqires a committed driver as things do happen fast aboard the 700hp Evoms machine. The committed driver also has to drive on the high range part of the RPM's to bring the most out of Evoms 700. Not an easy task, specially if you leave the factory braking system, a larger Brembo kit is well recommended in this case, 8 piston perhaps? yes do it!!! Chassis tuning is also a must on the 700hp, Bilstein PSS9s, dissapointed. Most reviews put down the infamous PSS9's and proved to be true. Nervous and uncomposed our 700 was jumpy. H&R would be my personal recommendation. The superb installation was done by Autodynamica's www.autodynamica.com facility in Mexico City. Service and price are unsurpassed for Mexican standards. A well recommended choice.
Any 996TT owner should at least consider Evoms bolt on parts to complete their 996TT. Fast, responsive, powerful and driveable.
Wow, what a day, I don't think I have reached 300kph so many times in one day. Certainly exhausting but lots of fun. I learned a lot about the enhanced perfomance out of the Evoms 996TT's. I would like to thank, Luis Galan from Autodynamica and my good friend Gerardo Tejeda for putting this together.
